This week on The Necessary Conversation, Chad, Haley, and Mary Lou discuss...
ðŠĶ Senator Lindsey Graham died Saturday at 71 following a sudden illness, ending 23 years in the Senate. The man who once called Trump a "race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot" became one of his biggest supporters. SC's Republican governor will appoint a replacement, and Trump says he already has someone in mind. We look back at Graham's legacy and what comes next.
ðĢ Week 20 of Trump's war with Iran â a war he said would be over in five. Trump declared the ceasefire "over" at the NATO summit and called Iranian leadership "scum." The Wall Street Journal reported Israel shared intelligence that Iran may be planning to assassinate Trump, though U.S. intelligence suspects it could be Israeli manipulation to push escalation. Trump posted that the U.S. would "decimate and destroy" Iran with "1000 Missiles Locked and Loaded" if they tried. Oil prices jumped 8%. We ask Mom and Dad: do you still think Trump is a good president?
ðĻ ICE shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old father and homebuilder who lived in the U.S. for 35 years with no criminal record. He wasn't even the target of the operation. His passengers say the official ICE account is a lie, and ICE claims none of the officers were wearing body cameras â which they blamed on Democrats. No charges have been filed. No officers have been named. We ask: is this murder?
ð New details emerged in the case of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old college football player who disappeared during a July 4th boat trip and was later found dead. His friends returned without him, had his phone and keys, and texts and Snapchat messages appeared deleted. We ask: what really happened on that island?
ðš We simmer down to talk about the Love Island finale and our favorite reality shows.
ðģïļ Trump fired the remaining Democratic commissioners on the Election Assistance Commission, and the Republican commissioner resigned â leaving the only federal agency devoted to election administration with zero commissioners and unable to function. This is the same agency that refused Trump's demand to require proof of citizenship on voter registration forms. With midterms approaching, there is now no federal election oversight at all. We ask: is Trump rigging the elections?
ðĶ Trump gutted the Endangered Species Act by ruling that completely destroying an animal's habitat no longer counts as "harm" unless an animal is directly killed. This opens critical habitats for drilling, mining, and development. Species now at risk of total extinction include the Florida manatee, the northern spotted owl, the wolverine, and Mom's beloved monarch butterfly. We ask her: what will you do if monarchs go extinct because of Trump?
ð° Four New York Times journalists were served federal subpoenas at their homes for reporting factually correct information about Trump still using the old Air Force One. The subpoenas came from the same U.S. Attorney Trump just nominated to lead national intelligence. The NYT's top lawyer said federal agents on reporters' doorsteps "should shock the conscience of any American." We ask: does freedom of the press still exist?
